HFSS (Three-dimensional modeling of electromagnetic fields) - a powerful software solution that calculates the multi-mode S-parameters and electromagnetic fields in three-dimensional passive structures of arbitrary shape. The transition from the program, who intend to structure the methods of microwave circuit theory (to which the method Oliner, having in some cases, high enough for practical problems of calculation accuracy) to a program that performs a full calculation of three-dimensional electromagnetic fields, due primarily to the fact that many of the real device can not be decomposed into elements that are in the library of models. This can be attributed even to the simplest case analysis of the smooth rotation of a multilayer microstrip line when you can not divide, where the microstrip line, and where the line is suspended from the substrate.

HFSS is used to solve the equations of electrodynamics, the finite element method (Finite Element Method, FEM), which includes adaptive generation and division of cells. Solutions for the electromagnetic field, found from Maxwell's equations to accurately determine all the characteristics of a microwave device, with the emergence and transformation of some types of waves in the other losses in the materials and the radiation, etc.

HFSS provides simulation capabilities of antennas, power dividers, the circuits of switching, waveguide components, filters, microwave and three-dimensional inhomogeneities, whose description is to create a drawing of the structure (Fig. B-1), the exact specification of the material, identification of ports and the required characteristics.
